Bernhard Heisig was a German painter. He was associated with the Leipzig School and painted in the tradition of Oskar Kokoschka and Max Beckmann. His experiences from World War II on both the western and eastern fronts were a recurring subject in his art. He was highly regarded by the East German regime and painted commissioned works for the likes of Erich Honecker. This made him controversial after the German reunification, when his painting Time and Life was selected to hang in the German parliament. The painting is a panorama of German history and hangs in the cafeteria on the first floor of the Reichstag building.
