The vessel was designed by American inventor David Bushnell. She was called Turtle. Like modern submarines, she used water as ballast and a screw propeller. However, her attack against British ship-of-the line HMS Eagle failed. According to some sources, the story was fabricated. Turtle latter sunk with a sloop which was transporting her.
