20/09/1952 DNA is confirmed as the bearer of heredity

Its role was confirmed by series of experiments conducted by Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase. DNA had been known to biologists since 1869. Many of them, however, assumed that proteins carried the hereditary information. Hershey and Chase showed that when viruses, infect bacteria, their DNA enters the host bacterial cell, but most of their protein does not.
