23rd September 1974: BBC launches the Ceefax teletext service

The system was called Ceefax. Teletext is a service for sending pages of text and simple geometric shapes on television screen. It can be used for news, weather forecast, TV schedules etc. The teletext broadcast has numbered pages. The user can browse them by changing page number with the TV control. Teletext proved to be a reliable text news service, especially during crisis, like September 2001 attacks.
