He is most known for his Geographic Expedition of 1869. It was the three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers. It included first ever passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell also served as a director of the U.S. Geological Survey. He became the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution.
