He was the longest serving astronaut in history. Young made the first manned flight in the Gemini program (with Gus Grissom) in 1965. In 1972 he became the ninth person to walk on the Moon as Commander of the Apollo 16 mission. He also commanded maiden orbital flight of the Space Shuttle in 1981, the STS-1.
