He is known as the pioneer of the reproductive medicine and in-vitro fertilization (IVF). In 1978 Edwards, together with surgeon Patrick Steptoe, successfully performed first conception through IVF. It led to the birth of Louise Brown, first test-tube baby. Their research had to be privately financed, because the medical establishment found the idea of a “test-tube baby” repugnant.
