Sri Lankan chemist Cyril Ponnamperuma researched the origin of life on Earth. His work was based on his predecessors Harold Urey and Stanley Miller. They demonstrated spontaneous synthesis of organic molecules in conditions similar to the young Earth. Ponnamperuma focused on producing compounds related to the nucleic acids.
