The first nation win both the World and Olympic titles in the same year

Sweden shut out the Czech Republic 4-0 in the Gold Medal Game to win the IIHF World Championships. Sweden had won the 2006 Winter Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Gold 3-2 versus Finland in Turin, Italy two months earlier. They therefore became the first hockey team to win both the Winter Olympics and the IIHF World Championships in the same year.

U.S. explodes the first airborne hydrogen bomb over Bikini Atoll

Operation Redwing was a United States series of 17 nuclear test detonations. They were conducted at Bikini and Enewetak atolls by Joint Task Force 7. The entire operation followed Project 56 and preceded Project 57. The primary intention was to test new, second-generation thermonuclear weapons.

Amelia Earhart lands in Ireland

The first woman who flew over Atlantic encountered strong northerly winds, icy conditions, and mechanical problems. She landed at in a pasture at Culmore, north of Derry, Northern Ireland. The landing was witnessed by Cecil King and T. Sawyer. When a farm hand asked, "Have you flown far?" Earhart replied, "From America."
