The Lord of the Rings dominates the Oscars

The 76th Academy Awards took place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles and were hosted by Billy Crystal. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won 11 awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The awards for Best Actor and Best Actress went to Sean Penn and Charlize Theron.

Video game Civilization II is released

Civilization II is a turn-based strategy video game in the Civilization series, developed and published by MicroProse. The game was designed by Brian Reynolds, Douglas Kaufman, and Jeff Briggs. It was originally released for the PC and later ported to the Sony PlayStation by Activision.

The first African-American woman wins an Oscar

Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to receive an Academy Award, winning in the Best Supporting Actress for Gone with the Wind. Gone with the Wind received 13 nominations, winning 8 of them. The movie was later listed by the American Film Institute among the top 100 American movies.
