He is considered by commentators, critics, media, and other martial artists to be the most influential martial artist and a pop culture icon of the 20th century, who bridged the gap between east and west. He is often credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films.

He has also competed for the Japanese DREAM promotion, where he made his name in their inaugural Lightweight Grand Prix and also fought once for ProElite's EliteXC promotion. As of July 26, 2018, he is #3 in the official UFC lightweight rankings.

Dustin Glenn Poirier is an American mixed martial artist, currently competing as a Lightweight and featherweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. A professional competitor since 2009, he formerly competed for Bang FC and the WEC. Poirier is one of the subjects of the documentary Fightville by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker, which examines the mixed martial arts scene in southern Louisiana. He holds notable victories over Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje, and Anthony Pettis. As of April 13, 2019, he is the interim UFC Lightweight Champion.
