Heathers: The Musical is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and a book by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy and based on the 1989 cult film Heathers. After a sold-out Los Angeles tryout, the show moved Off-Broadway in 2014. In June 2018, Heathers: The Musical opened in London at the off-West End theatre, The Other Palace, and a month later, it was announced that the show would be transferring to the West End, opening at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in September of 2018. Whilst being light-hearted with humorous characters and 'fun songs', the show opens conversations about dark issues including 'bullying, teen suicide, and violence in schools.' The 'social politics' of high school are shifted when 'rebellious' Veronica Sawyer meets the 'damaged romantic wild card' J.D., and the hierarchy ruled by the 'clique' of Heathers falls apart with 'accidental' and not so accidental murders. Heathers explores 'empowerment' and vulnerability in the relationships between friends, lovers, parents and school communities, creating a show of high emotion.
