He first became prominent as a film producer, and then as an influential figure in the aviation industry. Later in life, he became known for his eccentric behavior and reclusive lifestyle—oddities that were caused in part by a worsening obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), chronic pain from a near-fatal plane crash, and increasing deafness.

Cheong Eak Chong

Cheong Eak Chong, or, under his given name, Zhong Mingxuan, was a Chinese-Singaporean entrepreneur. Born in 1888 in Anxi County, Fujian, he emigrated to Singapore in 1921. He founded a jewellery firm there in 1925, and subsequently organized a bank with his cousin, sending his eldest son to open an office in Shanghai. The political turbulence in China from the 1940s on led Cheong to focus on his interests in Singapore and Hong Kong, where he diversified into real estate, property development, and tourism. He then founded a real estate firm in Singapore, the Hong Fok Corporation.

William Q. Atwood was a lumber baron in Saginaw, Michigan. Born a slave in Alabama, he was freed in 1853 in the will of his white master and father, and moved to the free state of Ohio. He became active in the Underground Railroad in Ripley, Ohio. During the American Civil War, Atwood moved to the northwest, settling in East Saginaw, Michigan in 1863. There he became successful in real estate and lumber dealing.
