Marian Anderson breaks barriers for black artists

Marian Anderson becomes the first black person to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Her performance as Ulrica in Giuseppe Verdi's Un ballo in maschera at the Met was the only time she sang an opera role on stage.

Gioacchino Rossini's cantata 'Stabat Mater' premieres

A work based on the traditional structure of the Stabat Mater for chorus and soloists. Initially, Rossini used his own librettos and compositions for a portion of the work. The Stabat Mater was performed complete for the first time in Paris at the Théâtre-Italien's Salle Ventadour.
