Kuneru train derailment

The Hirakhand express 18448, a scheduled passenger train from Jagdalpur to Bhubaneswar, derailed near the village of Kuneru in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, India. 41 people died and 68 others were injured in the accident. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Colima earthquake

The earthquake had a moment magnitude of 7.5. The epicenter was located on the Pacific coast in the Mexican state of Colima. The quake was felt as far away as Mexico City and in southern parts of the United States. 29 people died and 300 others were injured in the disaster.

Eldfell eruption

Eldfell is a volcanic cone just over 660 ft high on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. Its eruption caused a crisis for the island and almost led to its permanent evacuation. The volcanic ash destroyed around 400 homes. After the eruption, the islanders used heat from the cooling lava flows to generate electricity.

Apollo 1 fire

The first manned mission of the U.S. Apollo program, which had a difficult task, manned landing on the moon, suffered a terrible accident during a launch rehearsal test at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station Launch Complex 34. A cabin fire killed all three members of the crew and destroyed the command module.

Coalbrook mining disaster

On the 21st January 1960, the worst mining disaster occured in Coalbrook coal mine of Clydesdale Colliery in South Africa. 1000 miners were in the mine at the time and 435 died after being trapped. The cause of the accident was cascading pillar failure where a few pillars fail initially and this increases the load on the adjacent pillars causing them to fail.
