Mars Rover Spirit ceases to communicate with control

The next day the rover responded, but it was clear that it is not working properly. The cause of the trouble was identified as a problem with machine`s flash memory. It contained too many files. NASA remotely deleted old files and reformatted the memory. The rover was restored to its original working condition.

The first commercial Supersonic Concorde flight

The British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger jet airliner was introduced. It flew for the first time in 1969, had a maximum speed over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2.04 with seating for 92 to 128 passengers and was operated until 2003.

Little Joe 4 suborbital Mercury test reaches 16 km

The rocket was used for testing of launch escape system (LES) and heat shield for project Merury. The LES is a device connected to a space capsule, used to quickly separate the capsule from its launch vehicle rocket in case of emergency. A successor, Little Joe II, was used for flight testing of the Apollo LES.

The USS Nautilus is launched

USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was authorized in 1951 and launched in 1954. It was the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole on 3 August 1958. Nautilus was decommissioned in 1980 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982.

First vaccine against smallpox

It was introduced by English physician Edward Jenner in 1796. He followed up his observation that milkmaids who had previously caught cowpox did not later catch smallpox by showing that inoculated cowpox protected against inoculated smallpox. It was the first vaccine ever developed. Smallpox was eradicated in 1977.

Joseph Guillotin suggests humane method of execution

Contrary to the common belief, he did not invent the guillotine. He even opposed the death penalty. But his name became an eponym for it. The actual inventor of the prototype was a man named Antoine Louis. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin was also a member of a commission to investigate famous animal magnetism theory of Franz Mesmer.
