Former soccer Player George Weah becomes Liberia’s president

Weah was sworn in as president, making him the 4th youngest serving president in Africa, marking Liberia's first democratic transition in 74 years. He cited fighting corruption, reforming the economy, combating illiteracy and improving life conditions as the main targets of his presidency. Two other world-class African strikers, Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o, attended the inauguration.

Kobe Bryant is an American retired professional basketball player and businessman. Throughout his 20-year career, he played with the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA. Bryant scored the second most points in a single game in NBA history behind Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point game in 1962.


Sir Alf Ramsay, coach of 1966 World Cup triumph, is born

Sir Alfred Ernest Ramsey was an English football player and manager who was a manager of England from 1963 to 1974 and guided England to victory in the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Knighted in 1967 in recognition of England's World Cup win, Ramsey also managed England to third place in the 1968 European Championship and the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup and the 1972 European Championship.
