Christie's breaks world record price for female artist

Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot became the most expensive female artist at auction when Christie's in London sold her feathery portrait of a young redhead in a straw hat and purple dress for $10.9 million. The 1881 painting, "After Lunch," toppled the record set last year by a $10.7 million Louise Bourgeois sculpture.

Cartoonist Jack Kirby dies at 76

Jack Kirby was an American comic book artist, writer, and editor, widely regarded as one of the medium's major innovators and one of its most prolific and influential creators. In 1940, he and writer-editor Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, a predecessor of Marvel Comics.

Robert Schumann's "Rhenisch" premieres in Düsseldorf

The Third Symphony is scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in B♭, two bassoons, four French horns in E♭, two trumpets in E♭, three trombones, timpani and strings. It premiered in Düsseldorf, conducted by Schumann himself, and was received with mixed reviews, "ranging from praise without qualification to bewilderment".
