The 2000 National Hockey League All-Star Game took place on February 6, 2000, at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, home to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Riddick Bowe TKOs Michael Dokes

Riddick Bowe vs. Michael Dokes, billed as "The Homecoming", was a professional boxing match contested in 1993 for the WBA, IBF, and Lineal heavyweight world championships. It took place at Madison Square Garden and was broadcast by HBO. Referee Joe Santarpia stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:19 of the first round, awarding Bowe a TKO victory.

American tennis star Arthur Ashe dies of AIDS at 49

Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. was an American professional tennis player who won 3 Grand Slam titles. Ashe was the 1st black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team and the only black man ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980 and died from AIDS-related pneumonia at age 49.

Muhammad Ali TKOs Ernie Terrell

Muhammad Ali vs. Ernie Terrell was a professional boxing match contested in 1967, for the WBA & WBC Heavyweight Championship. The fight went the full distance with Ali winning through a unanimous decision. Ali taunted Terrell during the bout and beat him savagely but refused to move in for the knockout.

Sir Stanley Matthews makes the last of his 704 appearances

His only first team appearance of the season was also the last Football League game of his career, just after his 50th birthday, and was necessitated by injuries to both Peter Dobing and Gerry Bridgwood. The opponents that day were Fulham, and Stoke won the game 3–1. Though he felt he had retired too early and could have carried on playing for another two years, this brought an end to his 35-year professional career.

Munich air disaster

The Munich air disaster occurred when British European Airways Flight 609 crashed on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport. On the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed the "Busby Babes", along with supporters and journalists. Twenty of the 44 on the aircraft died at the scene.

The IV Olympic Winter Games open at Germany

The 1936 Winter Olympics, officially known as the IV Olympic Winter Games were a winter multi-sport event which was celebrated in 1936 in the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. Germany also hosted that year's Summer Olympics in Berlin. 1936 is the last year in which the Summer and Winter Games were both held in the same country.
