The world's first successfully cloned mammal

The existence of sheep Dolly was announced to the public roughly 8 months after she was „born“. It was cloned at the Roslin Institute in Scotland by Keith Campbell, Ian Wilmut, and their colleagues. The funding for cloning was provided by biotechnology company PPL Therapeutics and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Trans-Pacific balloon flight

American adventurer Steve Fossett became the first person who completed the first hot air balloon flight over Pacific Ocean. Fossett covered the distance of 9 600 kilometers. He took off from south Seoul, South Koream, and landed in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was very cold during the journey, because propane heaters in his balloon's gondola failed.

Streptomycin is discovered

American microbiologist Selman Waksman announced the discovery of a new antibiotic – the streptomycin. It was discovered by his PhD. student Albert Schatz in a research project financed by Merck and Co. Waksman later received Nobel prize in Physiology or medicine. Some people accused Waksman him of playing down the role of Schatz.
