AlphaGo artificial intelligence wins Go

AlphaGo, a computer Go program developed artificial intelligence company DeepMind, defeated Lee Sedol, 18-time world champion in Go. The match took place in Seoul, South Korea. AlphaGo won four times in five games. The match has been compared with the historic chess match between Deep Blue computer and Garry Kasparov.

American physician E. Donnall Thomas is born

He is celebrated as an inventor of the bone marrow transplantation. It was the first practical stem cell therapy. It is used for the treatment of various cancers of the blood or bone marrow, such as multiple myeloma or leukemia. The recipient's immune system is destroyed with radiation or chemotherapy before the transplantation.

Christopher Columbus returns from his first voyage

After spending almost a week in Portugal, Columbus returned to Spain. He discovered Santo Domingo a Cuba, although he wanted to sail to India. The largest of his three ships, Santa Maria, run aground and had to be abandoned. Columbus also noticed the difference between magnetic and geodetic north, although he did not discover it first.
