New York lifts subway fare from $2.50 to the current level of $2.75

The price of a single New York City subway or bus ride increased from $2.50 to $2.75 per ride. It was the 5th price increase in the past 8 years. According to New York Post, the fare hike covered only the raises of Metropolitan Transportation Authority employees.

Google angers China by shifting service to Hong Kong

Searching via all Google search sites, including Google Mobile, was moved from mainland China to Hong Kong. Subsequently, searching via all Google search sites in all languages was banned in mainland China. Any attempt to search using Google resulted in a DNS error.

First Pentium processor is released

The Intel Company introduced its first processor with the P5 architecture, better known as the Pentium. It was probably the best-known series of processors in history. Although Intel still sold processors called Pentium today, their architecture is different. The true Pentium series ended in 2006.

Lumiere brothers show their first movie

Employees Leaving the Lumière Factory, a French short black-and-white silent documentary film directed and produced by Louis Lumière, is often referred to as the 1st real motion picture ever made. However, Louis Le Prince's Roundhay Garden Scene pre-dated it by 7 years.

Stamp Act passes

The Stamp Act imposed a direct tax on the colonies of British America and required many printed materials in the colonies to be produced on stamped paper produced in London. The purpose of the tax was to help pay for troops stationed in North America after the British victory in the Seven Years' War.
