Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan finally accepts his Nobel Prize in literature

The 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan 'for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition'. The prize was announced by the Swedish Academy on 13 October 2016. He is the 12th Nobel laureate from the United States. The Swedish Academy announced in November 2016 that Dylan would not travel to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize Ceremony due to 'pre-existing commitments'. At the Nobel Banquet in Stockholm on December 10, 2016, Dylan's speech was given by Azita Raji, U.S. Ambassador to Sweden. Patti Smith accepted Dylan's Nobel and performed his song 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' to orchestral accompaniment. On April 1, 2017 Swedish Academy met with Bob Dylan for a private ceremony in Stockholm, during which Dylan received his gold medal and diploma.

A record with a signed vinyl gatefold sleeve of the legendary 1967 The Beatles album 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' sold for $290,500 at Heritage Auctions in Dallas. The price far exceeded a prior estimate of roughly $30,000.

Singer Marvin Gaye is shot to death by his father

His life came to a tragic end when Marvin Gaye was shot and killed by his own father one day short of his 45th birthday. Father shot his son twice in the upper torso. The wounds were fatal and he was pronounced dead on arrival at the California Hospital Medical Center.

BBC airs their spaghetti-tree hoax report

The spaghetti-tree hoax was a three-minute hoax report broadcast on April Fools' Day 1957 by the BBC current-affairs program Panorama, purportedly showing a family in southern Switzerland harvesting spaghetti from the family 'spaghetti tree.' At the time spaghetti was relatively unknown in the UK, so many Britons were unaware that it is made from wheat flour and water; several viewers afterward contacted the BBC for advice on growing their spaghetti trees. Decades later CNN called this broadcast "the biggest hoax that any reputable news establishment ever pulled."

'The Blue Angel' premieres in Germany

The Blue Angel is a tragicomic film directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Emil Jannings, Marlene Dietrich, and Kurt Gerron. It is based on Heinrich Mann's novel Professor Unrat and set in Weimar Germany. The film brought international fame to Marlene Dietrich.
