'War Paint' opens at the Nederlander Theatre

War Paint is a musical by Doug Wright, Scott Frankel and Michael Korie. It focuses on the lives and rivalry of 20th century entrepreneurs Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. Its Broadway premiere took place at the Nederlander Theatre, The production received several nominations and won awards for its costumes and wigs.

'The Realistic Joneses' opens on Broadway

The Realistic Joneses is a play by Will Eno, that gives a realistic inside look at the people who live next door. The Broadway production of the play took place at the Lyceum Theatre, after its earlier premiere at Yale Repertory Theater. It was nominated for 3 Drama League Awards and recognized twice for the Drama Desk Special Awards.

Author Isaac Asimov dies

Asimov was a science writer and well-known writers of science fiction. He died in New York City at the age of 72, from heart and kidney failure. He had dealt privately with a diagnosis of AIDS, which he'd contracted from a blood transfusion during bypass surgery.

Composer Igor Stravinsky dies

Influential Russian composer Igor Stravinsky created such famed works as 'The Rite of Spring,' 'Symphony in C' and 'The Rake's Progress.' Stravinsky died, at age 88, in New York City, with more than 100 works to his name. His approach to musical composition was one of constant renewal.

1st Tony Awards

The first awards ceremony was held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. The winners were presented with a scroll, a money clip and a cigarette lighter for the men or a 14-carat gold compact and bracelets for the women. A panel was consisted of approximately 868 voters.
