Humboldt Broncos bus crash

A northbound coach bus carrying players of the Humboldt Broncos, a junior ice hockey team, struck westbound semi-trailer truck near Armley, Saskatchewan in Canada. The truck failed to stop at a flashing stop sign, which led to deaths of 16 people. The crash took place at the intersection of Saskatchewan Highway 35 and 335.

L'Aquila earthquake

The region of Abruzzo in central Italy was hit by an earthquake with a 5.8 magnitude on Richter scale. The epicenter was near the town of L'Aquila. Total damage was calculated to be around $16 billion. 308 people have been reported to die during an earthquake. Roughly 1,500 were injured and around 65,000 were left homeless.

The Rwandan Genocide begins

The Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana returned from Tanzania, he was killed when his plane was shot down outside of the country’s capital, Kigali. This accident caused, that members of the Hutu ethnic majority in the east-central African nation of Rwanda murdered over 800,000 people, mostly of the Tutsi minority.

Tupelo–Gainesville tornado outbreak

Two small towns in Mississippi and Georgia were devastated by tornadoes. It caused nearly $13 million in damage across the region. This tornado ranks as the fourth most destructive storm in US history based on the number of dead. Nearly 420 people were killed by these tornadoes.
