Portugal seeks bailout amid eurozone crises

Portugal's government, led by Jose Socrates, requested an IMF-EU bailout package in a bid to stabilize its public finances. After Greece and Ireland, Portugal was the 3rd eurozone country to ask for a financial assistance after being unable to fund its debts.

Craig Newmark launches Craigslist in San Francisco

Craigslist is an American classified advertisements website with sections devoted to jobs, housing, for sale, items wanted, services, community, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums. Craig Newmark began the service as an email distribution list to friends, featuring local events in the San Francisco Bay Area. It started expanding to other U.S. cities in 2000, and now covers 70 countries.

The Bosnian War begins

The Bosnian War was an international armed conflict that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The war was part of the breakup of Yugoslavia. Events such as the Siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre later became iconic of the conflict.

US declares war on Germany

After Germany sunk the US ships, the vote to declare war on them was quickly passed by the US Congress. The US entered the war against Germany as an independent power, without officially joining the Allies. They made a major contribution of supplies, materials, and money. US forces arrived on the Western Front next year.

City of Vancouver is incorporated

A coastal seaport city in Canada was incorporated in the same year as the first transcontinental train arrived. President of Canadian Pacific Railway arrived to establish the CPR terminus in Port Moody and named the city after George Vancouver. Large companies fueled its economic activity which led to its rapid development.

The Battle of Sailor's Creek

The Battle of Sailor's Creek was fought in 1865, near Farmville, Virginia, as part of the Appomattox Campaign, near the end of the American Civil War. It was the largest battle of the Appomattox Campaign and the last major engagement between the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and local Richmond area defense forces.

The Battle of Shiloh

The Battle of Shiloh was a battle in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought in 1862 in southwestern Tennessee. Confederate Army of Mississippi under the leadership of General Albert Sidney Johnston, launched a surprise attack on the Army of Tennessee.

King Richard the Lionheart dies

King Richard I was the ruling king of England from July 1189 until April 1199. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine, and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes. Because of his reputation for being military leader and warrior, he was also known as the Richard the Lionheart.
