Lionel Messi becomes Barcelona’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League

Lionel Messi plays as a forward for Spanish club Barcelona. Messi started playing for the A squad in 2004 and managed to establish himself as one of the greatest players in the world. In the quarter-final match against Arsenal, he single-handedly sent them home by scoring 4 goals and securing a 4-1 win for the Barcelona.

Diego Maradona is suspended for 15 months for using cocaine before a game

Diego Maradona, the most acclaimed football player in the world was barred from playing by the Disciplinary Commission of the Italian League, after it was revealed he used cocaine before the game. He tested positive on cocaine usage after a match against Bari. According to doctors, he took the drug between 30 to 40 hours prior.

Hockey legend Gordie Howe completes a record 26th season

Gordon Howe was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, mostly known for playing 26 seasons in the NHL. Howe debuted with Detroit Red Wings in 1946 and spent his next 25 seasons with them. For his last season, Howe joined Hartford Whalers. Howe participated in all 80 matches of the season at the age of 51/52.

The American League of MLB begins using the designated hitter

The first designated hitter in the history of baseball was Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees when he went to bat in the first regular season game played under the controversial new rule. From the beginning, some people criticized the designated hitter in bitter, moralistic terms.

Italy suffer their worst ever defeat, losing 7-1 to Hungary

Since their 1st match in 1910, the Italian national football team competed in hundreds of matches. One of the well-known ones took place in Budapest. In the match, Italy played against the home team of Hungary. In a preparation game for the Olympics, Italy suffered the worst defeat in the club history, after losing 1-7.

Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the I Olympiad start

The first celebration of the modern Olympic Games took place in its ancient birthplace of Athens. Organised by the International Olympic Committee. The Games welcomed athletes from 14 nations, with the largest delegations coming from Greece, Germany, France and Great Britain.
