New Zealand rugby player Jonah Lomu is born

Jonah Tali Lomu was a New Zealand rugby union player. He became the youngest ever All Black when he played his first international in 1994 at the age of 19 years and 45 days. Playing on the wing, Lomu finished his international career with 63 caps and 37 tries.

Ernie Banks hits his 500th home run

Ernest Banks was an American professional baseball player who starred in Major League Baseball as a shortstop and first baseman for the Chicago Cubs. Banks hit his 500th home run at Chicago's Wrigley Field. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and was named to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

American skateboarder Tony Hawk is born

Anthony Frank Hawk is an American professional skateboarder, actor and owner of skateboard company Birdhouse. Hawk is well known for completing the first documented 900 and for his licensed video game titles, published by Activision. He is widely considered to be one of the most successful and influential pioneers of modern vertical skateboarding.

American baseball catcher Yogi Berra is born

Lawrence Peter "Yogi" Berra was an American professional baseball catcher, who later took on the roles of manager, and coach. He played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball, all but the last for the New York Yankees. He was an 18-time All-Star, and won 10 World Series championships as a player—more than any other player in MLB history.
