U.S. Army orders ENIAC computer

ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was among the earliest electronic general-purpose computers made. The United States Army financed its development at the University of Pennsylvania. It was primarily used to calculate artillery firing tables, though it also calculated differential equations for H-bomb.

Antikythera mechanism is discovered

Greek archeologist Valerios Stais found an ancient analog computer in a shipwreck near the coast of the Greek island Antikythera. The machine, now called the Antikythera mechanism, was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. It could also track the four-year cycle of athletic games which was like an Olympiad.

Physician Edward Jenner is born

Edward Jenner was an English physician and scientist who pioneered the smallpox vaccine, the first serum of its kind. Jenner is often called "the father of immunology", and his work is said to have "saved more lives than the work of any other human". He was appointed physician extraordinary to King George IV.
