U.S. Army orders ENIAC computer

ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was among the earliest electronic general-purpose computers made. The United States Army financed its development at the University of Pennsylvania. It was primarily used to calculate artillery firing tables, though it also calculated differential equations for H-bomb.

Antikythera mechanism is discovered

Greek archeologist Valerios Stais found an ancient analog computer in a shipwreck near the coast of the Greek island Antikythera. The machine, now called the Antikythera mechanism, was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. It could also track the four-year cycle of athletic games which was like an Olympiad.

American inventor John Deere dies

John Deere was an American blacksmith and manufacturer who founded Deere & Company, one of the largest and leading agricultural and construction equipment manufacturers in the world. Though often incorrectly credited with inventing the tractor, he revolutionized farming with the first commercially successful steel plow which was more effective in the tough prairie soil of Illinois then the cast-iron plows of his day.

American automobile pioneer Horace E. Dodge is born

Horace E. Dodge was an American automobile manufacturing pioneer, co-founder of the Dodge Brothers Company, and inventor of the first dirt-proof ball bearing. He and his elder brother, John F. Dodge, were inseparable from childhood. John was the sales oriented managerial type, Horace was a gifted mechanic. They first sold transmissions and engines to Oldsmobile and Ford before starting their own car company In 1913.

Physician Edward Jenner is born

Edward Jenner was an English physician and scientist who pioneered the smallpox vaccine, the first serum of its kind. Jenner is often called "the father of immunology", and his work is said to have "saved more lives than the work of any other human". He was appointed physician extraordinary to King George IV.
