NHL right wing Gordie Howe dies

Due to dementia, Howe spent most of his time after his wife's death residing with all 4 of his children on a rotating basis. While staying at his daughter's home in Texas, he had a major stroke in October 2014. He died in June 2016, at his son Murray's house in Sylvania, Ohio, a suburb of Toledo, at the age of 88. No cause was given.


New Jersey wins their second Stanley Cup

The 2000 Stanley Cup Finals was contested by the Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Devils and the Western Conference champion Dallas Stars. The Devils won the Cup in game six on a one-timer goal by Jason Arnott in double overtime. It was their second Stanley Cup overall and first since 1995.


Colorado Avalanche win their first Stanley Cup

The 1996 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the NHL 1995–96 season. It was contested by the Western Conference champion Colorado Avalanche and the Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers, 2 teams in the Final for the first time. Colorado defeated Florida in a four-game sweep to win their 1st Stanley Cup.


Nuxhall becomes the youngest player ever in a MLB game

At the height of American involvement in World War II, MLB teams were faced with problem, they missed players. 15-year-old Joe Nuxhall becomes the youngest person ever to play Major League Baseball when he pitches in a game for the Cincinnati Reds. He was an All-Star for the National League in 1955 and 1956.


Italy beat Czechoslovakia to win the World Cup

The 1934 FIFA World Cup Final was the deciding match of the 1934 FIFA World Cup. It was contested by Italy and Czechoslovakia. Italy won the game 2-1 for their first World Cup title at the now-closed Stadio Nazionale PNF in Rome in temperatures approaching 40 °C.
