United Kingdom wildfires

Record-breaking series of wildfires burned across the United Kingdom. The two largest fires, which were declared major incidents, burned over 7 square miles each and broke out on Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester and Winter Hill in Lancashire.

Sichuan landslide

A landslide occurred at about 5:38 am local time in Diexi Town, Mao County, Sichuan Province in south-western China. It destroyed 40 homes in Xinmo Village and killed 10 people, with a further 73 people missing. A second smaller landslide at around 8:15 pm impeded rescue efforts.

Igandu train disaster

The Igandu train disaster was an accident which occurred in Tanzania. In one of the worst rail accidents in African history, a large passenger train with over 1,200 people on board rolled backwards down a hill into a slow moving goods train, killing 281 people.

Fairchild Air Force Base B-52 crash

A USAF Boeing B-52 Stratofortress crashed at Fairchild Air Force Base, after its pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Arthur "Bud" Holland, maneuvered the bomber beyond its operational limits and lost control. The B-52 stalled, fell to the ground and exploded, killing Holland and the three other field-grade officers on board the aircraft.

Jakarta incident

British Airways Flight 9, sometimes referred to by its callsign Speedbird 9 or as the Jakarta incident, was a scheduled British Airways flight from London Heathrow to Auckland, with stops in Bombay, Madras, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, and Melbourne.
