Facebook reaches two billion users

Thirteen years after launching and less than five years after hitting one billion, Facebook announced that it has two billion monthly active users. This made it the largest social app in terms of logged-in users. YouTube had 1.5 billion at the same time, WeChat 889 million, Twitter 328 million and Snapchat 255 million.

The first six TED Talks are posted online

ED Conferences LLC (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a media organization that posts talks online for free distribution under the slogan "ideas worth spreading." Since June 2006, TED Talks have been offered for free viewing online, under an Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives Creative Commons license, through TED.com.

Space Shuttle Atlantis is launched to Mir space station

Atlantis delivered a crew of two cosmonauts, Anatoly Solovyev and Nikolai Budarin, to the station and recovered American astronaut Norman Thagard. It was the first docking of a shuttle to a space station in history and a beginning of the Shuttle–Mir Program. Mir and Atlantis created a largest spacecraft at the orbit.

Smoking leads to lung cancer – scientifically approved

The link between smoking and lung cancer is one of 'direct cause and effect', a special report by the Medical Research Council has found. The report studied the dramatic increase in deaths from lung cancer over the past 25 years and concluded the main cause was smoking.
