Trump meets Putin in Helsinki

Russia–United States summit or Trump-Putin summit is a summit meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in the Presidential Palace in Helsinki. It will focus on improving bilateral ties between the two countries which had been degrading due to the U.S. Intelligence Community's assessment that Russia tried to meddle with the results of the 2016 U.S. elections and try to normalize Russia-US relations since the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.

Sun Microsystems agrees to be acquired by Oracle

A major issue of the purchase was that Sun was a major competitor to Oracle, raising many concerns among antitrust regulators, open source advocates, customers, and employees. The EU Commission delayed the acquisition for several months over concerns of Oracle's plans for MySQL, Sun's competitor to the Oracle Database.

Chinese milk scandal

The 2008 Chinese milk scandal was a widespread food safety incident. The scandal involved milk and infant formula along with other food materials and components being adulterated with melamine. Of an estimated 300,000 victims in China, 6 babies died from kidney stones and other kidney damage and an estimated 54,000 babies were hospitalized.

DIY guru Martha Stewart is sentenced for shady stock sales

After a highly publicized six-week jury trial, Stewart was found guilty of felony charges of conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators, and was sentenced to serve a five-month term in a federal correctional facility and a two-year period of supervised release.

John F. Kennedy Jr. is killed in a plane crash

John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife, C. B. Kennedy and her sister, L. Bessette, die when the single-engine plane that Kennedy was piloting crashes into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. There was no emergency call from the plane. The last radar signal showed Kennedy 16 miles from the airport.

Saddam Hussein becomes president of Iraq

Saddam formally rose to power in 1979, although he had already been the de facto head of Iraq for several years. He suppressed several movements, particularly Shi'a and Kurdish movements, which sought to overthrow the government or gain independence, and maintained power during the Iran–Iraq War and the Gulf War.

Mount Blanc Road tunnel between France & Italy opens

The Mont Blanc Tunnel is a highway tunnel in Europe, under the Mont Blanc mountain in the Alps. The tunnel is 11.611 km in length, 8.6 m in width, and 4.35 m in height. The tunnel consists of a single gallery with a two-lane dual direction road. At the time of its construction, it tripled the length of any existing highway tunnel.
