French singer and guitarist Sacha Distel dies

Alexandre "Sacha" Distel was a French singer and guitarist who had hits with a cover version of the Academy Award-winning "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head", "Scoubidou", and "The Good Life". Distel died aged 71, after a long illness, in Rayol-Canadel, southeast France.

Woodstock 99 music festival begins in Rome, New York

Woodstock '99 was the second large-scale music festival that attempted to emulate the original Woodstock festival of 1969. It was held in upstate New York, this time in Rome. Approximately 400,000 people attended the festival which was portrayed by the media as being marred by violence, rape, and fires.

Final episode of sitcom 'Ellen' airs on ABC

Ellen is an American television sitcom that aired on the ABC network, consisting of 109 episodes. The final episodes of Ellen were criticized for focusing too much on gay issues. Eventually, even members of the LGBT community began to criticize the show's serious new tone as well and ABC pulled the show from the air after five seasons.

The satirical news program 'The Daily Show' premieres

The half-hour-long show was first hosted by Craig Kilborn until 1998. Jon Stewart then took over as the host, making the show more strongly focused on political satire and news satire, in contrast with the pop culture focus during Kilborn's tenure.

Ewan McGregor marries Eve Mavrakis

Ewan Gordon McGregor is a Scottish actor, known internationally for his various film roles, including independent dramas, science-fiction epics, and musicals. McGregor married Eve Mavrakis, a French-Greek Jewish production designer whom he met on the set of Kavanagh QC. Together they have four daughters, one of them adopted from Mongolia.
