Ancient Qur'an fragments are discovered

So called Birmingham Quran manuscript is a piece of parchment with parts of Islamic parts of Surahs 19 to 20. They are written in ink on parchment, using an Arabic Hijazi script and still clearly readable. The manuscript was radiocarbon dated between 568 and 645 AD. Muhammad lived from around 570 to 632.

Space Shuttle Discovery lands

Discovery took off only six day after landing of her sister ship Atlantis. It was the fastest turnaround between flights in the history of the Shuttle program. Main mission objective was to deliver Tracking and data relay satellite (TORS) to orbit. The astronauts also conducted plenty of experiments, most of them from the field of biological sciences.

Scottish engineer Sandford Fleming dies

He is known as the man, who divided the world into time zones. He suggested them while in charge of the initial survey for the Canadian Pacific Railway across the continent. His idea evolved in the current system of time zones. Fleming also designed the Three Penny Beaver, first Canadian postage stamp.

American engineer John A. Roebling dies

He pioneered the construction of the suspension bridges. His most famous creation is the Brooklyn Bridge. He died during its construction. Roebling was standing on at the edge of the rock, working on fixing the bridge location. His foot was crushed by an arriving ferry. The wound got infected by tetanus.

Anniversaries of the (in)famous
