Ferdinand joined fellow Premier League side Manchester United on a five-year deal to become the most expensive British footballer in history at the time and the world's most expensive defender for a second time, a title he had lost in 2001 to Lilian Thuram.

The first weight lifter wins three gold medals at the Olympic Games

Naim Suleymanoglu won in dramatic competition against his rival, Valerios Leonidis of Greece, trading 3 world-record lifts. The man known as Pocket Hercules snatched 324.5 pounds and proceeded to raise 413.75 pounds in the clean-and-jerk, totaling for a 738.25 pounds. The event took place in the basement of the Georgia World Congress Center.

OJ Simpson pleads "Absolutely 100% Not Guilty" of murder

At his second arraignment, when asked how he pleaded to the murders, Simpson, breaking a courtroom practice that says the accused may plead using only the words "guilty" or "not guilty," firmly stated: "Absolutely, one hundred percent, not guilty."

Spain and Real Madrid great Emilio Butragueno is born

Emilio Butragueño Santos is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a striker. He was best known for his spell with Real Madrid. Nicknamed The Vulture, he was a member of the legendary Quinta del Buitre, along with Manolo Sanchís, Rafael Martín Vázquez, Míchel and Miguel Pardeza.

The first ever motor race is held in France

The road from Paris to Rouen became the venue of a historical event when the 1st competitive motor race took place there. The newspaper Le Petit Journal organized the 126 km long race with 102 entrants. The fastest petrol powered car was driven by Albert Lemaítre. Steam powered cars were not eligible to win the premier prize.
