K2 disaster

On the Himalayan peak K2 which is with its 8 611m the second highest mountain in the world, 11 climbers perished an international expedition and wanted to overcome the peak without the help of oxygen devices. As a result of a series of errors in the preparation and bad weather the mountaineers gradually died of falls, avalanches and mountain sickness, others suffered heavy frostbite. It was one of the worst tragedies in the history of mountaineering.

Mississippi River bridge collapses and killed 13 people

It had a catastrophic failure during the evening rush hour in 2007, killing 13 people and injuring 145. The NTSB cited a design flaw as the likely cause of the collapse, noting that a too-thin gusset plate ripped along a line of rivets, and additional weight on the bridge at the time contributed to the catastrophic failure.

Charles Whitman kills 16 people at the University of Texas at Austin

After stabbing his mother and his wife to death the night before, Charles Whitman, a former Marine, took rifles and other weapons to the observation deck atop the Main Building tower at the University of Texas at Austin, then opened fire indiscriminately on persons on the surrounding campus and streets.
