Lindow Man is discovered

Lindow Man, also known as Lindow II and as Pete Marsh, is the preserved bog body of a man discovered in a peat bog at Lindow Moss near Wilmslow in Cheshire, North West England. The human remains were found in 1984 by commercial peat-cutters.

USS Nautilus submerges for her voyage under North Pole

The voyage was envisioned by French Science-Fiction writer Jules Verne in his book 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea, first published in 1870. USS Nautilus was the first operational nuclear submarine in history. The passage under the polar ice without surfacing was enabled by inertial navigation system developed by North American Aviation.

English chemist Joseph Priestley discovers oxygen

He did not call it oxygen. He used the term dephlogisticated air, because he believed in the phlogiston theory. The theory postulated that a fire-like element called phlogiston is contained within combustible bodies and released during combustion. On the other hand, Priestley knew that oxygen is consumed during combustion or breathing.

Christopher Columbus lands on 'Isla Santa'

Columbus explored the Gulf of Paria which separates Trinidad from mainland Venezuela. He then explored the mainland of South America, including the Orinoco River. He also sailed to the islands of Chacachacare and Margarita Island and sighted and named islands Bella Forma and Concepcion.
