The Greenwich foot tunnel under the River Thames opens

The Greenwich Foot Tunnel crosses beneath the River Thames in East London, linking Greenwich on the south bank with the Isle of Dogs on the north. The tunnel was designed by civil engineer Sir Alexander Binnie for London County Council and constructed by contractor John Cochrane & Co.

Author Hans Christian Andersen dies

Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Soon afterward, he started to show signs of liver cancer. He died in 1875, in a house called Rolighed, near Copenhagen, the home of his close friends.

Fashion designer Louis Vuitton is born

Louis Vuitton was a French fashion designer and businessman. He was the founder of the Louis Vuitton brand of leather goods now owned by LVMH. Prior to this, he had been appointed as trunk-maker to Empress Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III.
