2008

The first person wins eight gold medals in one Olympic Games

Michael Fred Phelps is an American retired competitive swimmer and the most successful and most decorated Olympian of all time. When he won eight gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Games, Phelps broke fellow American swimmer Mark Spitz's 1972 record of seven first-place finishes at any single Olympic Games.

Beckham scores goal from his own half

David Beckham became something of a household name when he scored a spectacular goal in a match against Wimbledon. With United leading 2–0, Beckham noticed that Wimbledon's goalkeeper Neil Sullivan was standing a long way out of his goal, and hit a shot from the halfway line that floated over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Zidane makes his international debut netting twice

Zidane was a member of the French under-21 squad that won a bronze medal at the 1993 Mediterranean Games in Languedoc-Roussillon. He earned his first cap with France as a substitute in a friendly against the Czech Republic, which ended in a 2–2 draw after Zidane scored twice to help France erase a 2–0 deficit.

American snowboarder Elena Hight is born

Elena Hight is an American Olympic snowboarder. While training with the U.S. snowboard team in Mammoth, California, Hight became the first woman to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo in a halfpipe, she also became the first snowboarder to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo during a halfpipe competition.

American basketball player Rudy Gay is born

Rudy Carlton Gay Jr. is an American professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association. The 6'8" small forward played college basketball for the University of Connecticut before being drafted eighth overall in the 2006 NBA draft by the Houston Rockets; he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies days later.

American baseball player Dustin Pedroia is born

Dustin Luis Pedroia is an American baseball second baseman for the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball. He is a four-time All-Star and an American League Most Valuable Player award winner, who has also received four Gold Glove Awards and a single Silver Slugger award.

US balloonists' record Atlantic crossing

Double Eagle II, piloted by Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson, and Larry Newman, became the first balloon to cross the Atlantic Ocean when it landed in Miserey near Paris, 137 hours 6 minutes after leaving Presque Isle, Maine.

French footballer Thierry Henry is born

Thierry Daniel Henry is a French professional football coach and former player. He is the second assistant coach of the Belgium national team. During his playing career, Henry played for Monaco, Juventus, Barcelona, New York Red Bulls and spent eight years at Arsenal where he is the club's record goalscorer.

Auto racer Nelson Piquet is born

Nelson Piquet Souto Maior is a Brazilian former racing driver and businessman. After retiring from Formula One, Piquet tried his hand at the Indianapolis 500 for two years. He also tried his hand at sports car racing during and after his Formula One career.
