Al Jazeera America launches

Al Jazeera is a state-funded broadcaster in Doha, Qatar, owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty television channels in multiple languages.

Churchill pays tribute to RAF pilots

"Never was so much owed by so many to so few" was a wartime speech made by Winston Churchill in 1940. The name stems from the specific line in the speech, Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few, referring to the ongoing efforts of the RAF crews who were at the time fighting the Battle of Britain.

Stalinist agent kills Leon Trotsky

Trotsky was attacked in his study by Ramon Mercader, a Spanish communist, who used an ice axe as a weapon. The blow to his head was bungled and failed to kill Trotsky instantly. Witnesses stated that Trotsky spat on Mercader, and began struggling fiercely with him, which resulted in Mercader's hand being broken.

First enslaved Africans arrive to the New World

In 1619, Dutch traders brought African slaves taken from a Spanish ship to Jamestown. In North America, the Africans were also generally treated as indentured servants in the early colonial era. Several colonial colleges held enslaved people as workers and relied on them to operate.
