Yoga legend B.K.S. Iyengar dies

B.K.S. Iyengar was the founder of the style of yoga known as "Iyengar Yoga" and was considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world. Iyengar died in Pune, India from heart failure and renal failure, aged 95.

Usain Bolt wins 200m at World Championships in Athletics

In the men's 200 meters, Usain Bolt broke his own world record with a time of 19.19 seconds. Alonso Edward of Panama won silver with a national record of 19.81. Wallace Spearmon of the USA won bronze, in 19.85.

2003

Cristiano Ronaldo makes his international debut

At age 18, Ronaldo made his first senior appearance for Portugal in a 1–0 victory over Kazakhstan. He was subsequently called up for UEFA Euro 2004, held in his home country, and scored his first international goal in a 2–1 group stage loss to eventual champions Greece.

1922

The first world championship athletics for women is held

The 1922 Women's World Games were the first regular international Women's World Games and the first Track and field competitions for women. The tournament was held on a single day at the Pershing Stadium in Paris. The games were attended by 77 participants from 5 nations.
