60 million people in Pakistan are at risk from Arsenic poisoning

The study appeared in the journal Science Advances. The authors developed a map of contaminated groundwater pumps. They determined some 88 million people were living in high-risk areas. Given that about 60-70 percent of the population relies on groundwater, roughly 50 or 60 million were endangered.

The Galileo spacecraft discovers a moon Dactyl

A minor-planet moon is an astronomical object that orbits a minor planet as its natural satellite. It is thought that many asteroids and Kuiper belt objects may possess moons, in some cases quite substantial in size. The first asteroid moon was confirmed when the Galileo probe discovered the small Dactyl orbiting 243 Ida in the asteroid belt.

The first photo of Earth from the Moon

The Lunar Orbiter 1 unmanned robotic spacecraft, part of the Lunar Orbiter Program, was the first American spacecraft to orbit the Moon. It took the first two pictures of the Earth ever from the distance of the Moon. Accurate data were acquired from all other experiments throughout the mission.

Legendary transport aircraft C-130 Hercules flies for the first time

Hercules can use unprepared runways for take-offs and landings. It was originally designed as a troop, medevac, and cargo transport aircraft. Later it was adapted for variety of other roles, including a gunship variant, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting.
