Library of Birmingham opens

The Library of Birmingham is a public library in Birmingham, England. It is situated on the west side of the city center at Centenary Square, beside the Birmingham Rep and Baskerville House. It has been described as the largest public library in the UK, the largest public cultural space in Europe, and the largest regional library in Europe.

Cornerstone of Dancing House is laid

The Dancing House is the nickname given to the Nationale-Nederlanden building on the Rašínovo nábřeží in Prague, Czech Republic. It was designed by the Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić in cooperation with Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry on a vacant riverfront plot.

'Into the Woods' closes at Martin Beck Theater

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Rapunzel", and "Cinderella", as well as several others.

Schoenberg's 'Funf Orchesterstucke' premieres in London

The Five Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 16, were composed by Arnold Schoenberg. The work had its world premiere in London at a Promenade Concert, conducted by Henry Wood. The work exists in two different scorings: the original 1909 version for a very large orchestra and the revised version which reduces the size to more-or-less normal proportions.
