The US and China join Paris climate deal

The Paris Agreement is an agreement with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, dealing with greenhouse-gas-emissions mitigation, adaptation, and finance, starting in the year 2020. In 2016, the US and China issued a joint statement confirming that both countries would sign the Paris Climate Agreement.

Russian school siege ends in violence

The Beslan school siege lasted three days, involved the illegal imprisonment of over 1,100 people as hostages, and ended with the deaths of at least 334 people. The crisis began when a group of armed Islamic militants, mostly Ingush and Chechen, occupied School Number One in the town of Beslan, North Ossetia.

HP and Compaq agree to merge

Compaq rose to become the largest supplier of PC systems during the 1990s before being overtaken by HP in 2001. Struggling to keep up in the price wars against Dell, as well as with a risky acquisition of DEC, Compaq was acquired for US$25 billion by HP in 2002. The Compaq brand remained in use by HP for lower-end systems until 2013 when it was discontinued.

Corporation eBay is founded

eBay Inc. is an American multinational e-commerce corporation based in San Jose, California that facilitates consumer-to-consumer and business-to-consumer sales through its website. eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar in 1995 and became a notable success story of the dot-com bubble. eBay is a multibillion-dollar business with operations in about 30 countries, as of 2011.

Qatar becomes an independent state

The General Treaty reserved foreign affairs and defence to the United Kingdom but allowed internal autonomy. In 1971, those "special treaty arrangements" that were "inconsistent with full international responsibility as a sovereign and independent state" were terminated.

Sweden switches to driving on the right Hand Side

A non-binding referendum with a turnout of 53.2% on the introduction of right-hand traffic failed in 1955, with most of the voters being against it. After the pressure from the Council of Europe, Riksdag approved the change 8 years later and the traffic changed to driving on the right-hand side of the road in the following years.

The first Labour Day in the U.S.

Labor Day in the US is a public holiday celebrated on the 1st Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend and it is considered the unofficial end of summer in the US.

San Marino is founded

The Republic of San Marino is an enclaved microstate, situated on the Italian Peninsula. Saint Marinus founded a chapel and monastery on the Monte Titano. This community later grew into what is now the state of San Marino. According to tradition, Marinus was a stonemason who came there from the Croatian island of Rab.
