The Funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales takes place in London

The public funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, took place in London when the tenor bell sounded to signal the departure of the cortège from Kensington Palace. The coffin was carried from the palace on a gun carriage, along Hyde Park to St. James's Palace, where Diana's body had remained for 5 days before being taken to Kensington Palace.

Moscow recognizes the independence of the Baltic states

The Baltic states were under Soviet rule from the end of World War II in 1945, from Sovietization onwards until independence was regained in 1991. The Russian troops stayed for an additional three years, as Boris Yeltsin linked the issue of Russian minorities with troop withdrawals.

The US pledges to reconstruct post-war Germany

"Restatement of Policy on Germany" is a speech by James F. Byrnes, the United States Secretary of State, held in Stuttgart in 1946. Also known as the "Speech of hope" it set the tone of future US policy as it repudiated the Morgenthau Plan economic policies and with its message of a change to a policy of economic reconstruction gave the Germans hope for the future.

The first true supermarket is opened

Piggly Wiggly is an American supermarket chain operating in the Southern and Midwestern regions of the United States. Its first outlet opened in 1916 in Memphis, Tennessee, and is notable for having been the first true self-service grocery store, and the originator of various familiar supermarket features.

The US President William McKinley is shot

William McKinley was the 25th President of the US, assassinated 6 months into his 2nd term. He was shot at the Pan-American Exposition held at the Temple of Music in Buffalo. Leon Czologosz, an anarchist that lost his job during the economic Panic of 1893 shot him twice in the abdomen. McKinley died 7 days after the incident.

World's first submarine is used in combat

The vessel was designed by American inventor David Bushnell. She was called Turtle. Like modern submarines, she used water as ballast and a screw propeller. However, her attack against British ship-of-the line HMS Eagle failed. According to some sources, the story was fabricated. Turtle latter sunk with a sloop which was transporting her.
