Russia tests largest ever conventional weapon

The “Aviation Thermobaric Bomb of Increased Power” is a Russian-designed, bomber-delivered thermobaric weapon. Nicknamed the “Father of All Bombs,” it is reportedly similar to the US military's GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast which is often unofficially called the "Mother of All Bombs". The new weapon is to replace several smaller type nuclear bombs in the Russian arsenal.

Mars Global Surveyor reaches the red planet

The Surveyor spacecraft was launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Station in Florida in November 1996 aboard a Delta II rocket. The spacecraft traveled nearly 750 million kilometers over the course of a 300-day cruise to reach Mars.

The last known person dies of smallpox

Patients name was Janet Parker. She was a medical photographer at the university of Birmingham. Her dark room was above the laboratory where research on smallpox viruses was being conducted. Although vaccinated twelve years ago, Parker got infected by Variola major virus, the most serious type of smallpox, and died.
