Merrimack Valley gas explosions

In 2018, excessive pressure in natural gas lines owned by Columbia Gas of Massachusetts caused a series of explosions and fires to occur in as many as 40 homes, with over 80 individual fires, in the Merrimack Valley, Massachusetts, towns of Lawrence, Andover, and North Andover. One person was killed and 30,000 were forced to evacuate their homes.

Disappearance of Hannah Graham

Hannah Graham was an 18-year-old second-year British American student at the University of Virginia who went missing in September 2014. She was last seen early in the morning, at the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia. Five weeks later, her remains were discovered on an abandoned property in nearby Albemarle County. Jesse Matthew pled guilty to murdering Graham and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Taliban attacks the US consulate in Herat

The U.S. consulate in Herat, Afghanistan was attacked by a group of Taliban militants. A large truck drove up to the Consulate's primary vehicle entry point and detonated a massive improvised explosive charge, causing extensive damage. A gun battle ensued, and all seven attackers were killed. No Americans were killed or seriously injured.

Hurricane Ike makes landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast of the US

The eye of Hurricane Ike approached the upper Texas coast, making landfall over the east end of Galveston Island, with a high storm surge, and travelled north up Galveston Bay, along the east side of Houston. 37 people are known to have lost their lives in Texas due to Ike while hundreds are still missing.

Devastating storm heads toward Caribbean

Hurricane Hugo was a powerful Cape Verde hurricane that caused widespread damage and loss of life in Guadeloupe, Saint Croix, Puerto Rico, and the Southeast United States. Severe damage was reported throughout the islands of the Caribbean. The storm caused an estimated $3 billion in damages in the Caribbean.
