Earthquake hits Illapel

The 2015 Illapel earthquake occurred 46 km offshore from Illapel, with a moment magnitude of 8.3. The initial quake lasted between three and five minutes; it was followed by several aftershocks greater than magnitude six and two that exceeded 7.0 moment magnitude.

Washington Navy Yard shooting

The Washington Navy Yard shooting occurred when a lone gunman, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, fatally shot 12 people and injured three others in a mass shooting at the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command inside the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast Washington, D.C. It was the second-deadliest mass murder on a U.S. military base.

Reno Air Races crash

The Galloping Ghost, a highly modified North American P-51D Mustang racing aircraft, crashed into spectators while competing at the Reno Air Races, killing the pilot, James K. "Jimmy" Leeward, and 10 people on the ground. Sixty-nine more people on the ground were injured.

One-Two-GO Airlines Flight 269 crashes

One-Two-GO Airlines Flight 269, a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, crashed into an embankment beside runway 27 at Phuket International Airport bursting into flames upon impact, during an attempted go-around after an aborted landing, killing 89 of the 130 persons on board. One survivor died of burn injuries several days after the crash.

A bomb explodes on Wall Street

The Wall Street bombing occurred in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City. The blast killed 30 people immediately, and another eight died later of wounds sustained in the blast. There were 143 seriously injured, and the total number of injured was in the hundreds.
