SpaceShipOne performs a successful spaceflight

SpaceShipOne is an experimental air-launched rocket-powered aircraft with sub-orbital spaceflight capability at speeds of up to 900 m/s, using a hybrid rocket motor. SpaceShipOne completed the first manned private spaceflight in 2004. That same year, it won the US$10 million Ansari X Prize and was immediately retired from active service.

Space Shuttle Discovery is launched

It was the first Space Shuttle flight after Challenger disaster in 1986. Apart from restarting the Shuttle program, the mission had several payloads. Most important was TDRS-3 Satelite. Astronauts conducted several experiments. Discovery suffered severe thermal protection damage during re-entry. Similar damage led to the loss of Columbia fifteen years later.

Soviet space station Salyut 6 is launched

It was the first of second-generation space stations. It possessed several design advances. These included a second docking port, a new main propulsion system and the multispectral telescope. The addition of the second docking port made crew handovers and station resupply by unmanned Progress freighters.

The Chevrolet Camaro, originally named Panther, is introduced

The Chevrolet Camaro is an American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car and some versions also as a muscle car. It went on sale for the 1967 model year and was designed as a competing model to the Ford Mustang. The car shared its platform and major components with the Pontiac Firebird, also introduced for 1967.

The convention establishing CERN is signed

The convention establishing CERN was ratified in 1954 by 12 countries in Europe. The acronym CERN originally represented the French words for Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, meaning European Council for Nuclear Research, which was a provisional council for building the laboratory, established by 12 European governments in 1952.

The world's first electric tramway launches

The Blackpool Tramway runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. The line dates back to 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world. It is operated by Blackpool Transport and runs for 11 miles. It carried 5.2 million passengers in the 2017/18 financial year.
